SUMMARY:FFB Week 31 - Middle Mile Networks: More Traffic than You Were Expecting
DESCRIPTION:While much of the attention of the industry is on the BEAD program\, the NTIA has already allocated $930 million of the Middle Mile Infrastructure fund\, and construction on these Middle Mile Networks will be beginning soon. But what\, specifically\, do we mean by the Middle Mile Network. This session of Fiber for Breakfast examines the Middle Mile Network from its definition to practical aspects of connecting broadband access networks to the Internet. We will survey:\n• The NTIA’s definition of Middle Mile Infrastructure\,\n• The common understanding of Middle Mile Networks as the connection between access networks and the Internet\,\n• The requirements that Middle Mile Networks must meet\,\n• How the introduction of IP functionality into access networks affects Middle Mile Networks\, and\n• How the introduction of 100 Mb/s capacity for all lines served by a central office causes the data traffic aggregated onto the Middle Mile Network to mushroom into terabits/sec of traffic.\nAs access networks are transformed to provide the requisite capacity to meet federal requirements\, the Middle Mile Networks will need to be transformed\, too. \nWebinar Presenter: Rick Talbot\, Principal Analyst\, ACG Research \nRick Talbot\, Principal Analyst of Intelligent Optical Networking\, Broadband Network Transformation\, and 5G RAN xHaul practices at ACG Research\, combines expertise in network access\, optical transport and switching technologies\, and a deep understanding of the telecommunications industry competitive landscape\, business (and regulatory) issues and economic trends to provide a comprehensive view of the industry. He gained this broad experience in over 40 years of technical marketing and sales engineering roles at network systems vendors and network architecture design roles at service providers. \nRick holds an MBA from Southern Methodist University and a Bachelor of Engineering Science from Trinity University. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Texas and a senior Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers. (IEEE) \n  \n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:FFB Week 32 - Why Security is Key to Enduring Fiber Success
DESCRIPTION:Security is the top of mind for business decision makers as sophisticated cybersecurity attacks can disrupt the entire business. The Futurum Group and Dell collaborated on a survey to better understand the threats that organizations must address and develop better security strategies. Today organizations must prioritize cybersecurity investment to prevent business disruption and protect business outcomes. As such\, strengthening the overall security posture requires organizations to give fiber technology and capabilities topmost consideration since they deliver robust and unique security capabilities and benefits to any organization. \nWebinar Presenter: Ron Westfall\, Research Director\, The Futurum Group \nRon is an experienced\, customer-focused research expert and analyst\, with over 20 years of experience in the digital and IT transformation markets\, working with businesses to drive consistent revenue and sales growth. \nHe is a recognized authority at tracking the evolution of and identifying the key disruptive trends within the service enablement ecosystem\, including a wide range of topics across software and services\, infrastructure\, 5G communications\, Internet of Things (IoT)\, Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, analytics\, security\, cloud computing\, revenue management\, and regulatory issues. \nPrior to his work with The Futurum Group\, Ron worked with GlobalData Technology creating syndicated and custom research across a wide variety of technical fields. His work with Current Analysis focused on the broadband and service provider infrastructure markets. \nRon holds a Master of Arts in Public Policy from University of Nevada — Las Vegas and a Bachelor of Arts in political science/government from William and Mary. \n  \n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:FFB Week 33 - Bringing a Consumer Perspective to Home Internet
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 5 years\, satisfaction with home internet providers has risen for the whole industry\, but particularly for Fiber-based providers (10 pts). We do see the higher speed tiers and network quality being offered to customers today as driving the rise in satisfaction. Still\, not all consumers want or are even aware of higher speeds and Gigabit speed tiers. Others believe they can cut the Fiber internet cord and get by with 5G unlimited plans or free WiFi. As the Fiber industry is poised to expand\, it may need to go beyond the focus on speed and adopt targeted campaigns to attract and retain very different sets of customers. \nWebinar Presenter: Dritan Nesho\, Global CEO\, HarrisX \nDritan Nesho is a business executive and entrepreneur with experience in corporate strategy\, market research\, product development\, technology\, media\, and public policy. He is the CEO of HarrisX\, a leading Technology\, Media and Telecom focused market research and data analytics company.  Dritan also serves as a co-director of the Harvard-Harris Poll\, a monthly public policy poll conducted by the Harvard Center for American Political Studies (CAPS) and The Harris Poll. Previously\, Dritan served in the roles of Director of Corporate Strategy and M&A\, Director of Product Management\, and Director of Civic Technology at Microsoft\, working close with two Microsoft CEOs\, its President\, Chief Strategy and Chief Marketing officers. He co-founded and oversaw the development of Microsoft Pulse\, a real-time audience and consumer research platform\, and was involved in building Microsoft’s campaign technology services ecosystem. Prior to Microsoft\, Dritan served as Vice President and Chief of Staff to the CEO at Penn Schoen Berland\, a leading market research\, political polling\, and strategic consulting firm\, and was a Director and Chief of Staff to the global CEO of Burson-Marsteller\, the public relations and public affairs giant. His clients have included Apple\, AT&T\, Facebook/Meta\, Microsoft\, News Corporation\, T-Mobile and Verizon.\, among others Dritan is a Fellow at Harvard’s Institute for Quantitative Social Sciences and lectures on political polling and opinion research at Harvard University and at The George Washington University’s Graduate School of Political Management. \n  \n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:FFB Week 35 - Fiber is Key to Ambitious Climate Action Plans
DESCRIPTION:In this Fiber for Breakfast\, hear from Nadja Turek\, Director of Sustainability\, about altafiber (formerly Cincinnati Bell) and Hawaiian Telcom’s unique climate action plans to reduce each company’s carbon emissions by 40% by 2030\, on the road to net-zero emissions by 2040. We all need this urgency and order of magnitude reduction to meet Paris Climate Accord targets and hold global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Nadja will discuss key carbon reduction (and business efficiency and resiliency) actions\, including transitioning customers from copper to fiber solutions and powering down the copper network. She also oversees the company’s climate risk assessments in the Midwest and Hawaii. In her role\, Nadja works internally with the network\, fleet\, and real estate experts and externally with technology\, community\, and finance collaborators to address climate change. Nadja’s background combines environmental sustainability with mission and operational resiliency. \nWebinar Presenter: Nadja Turek\, PE\, Sustainability Director\, altafiber and Hawaiian Telcom \nMs. Turek became the Director of Sustainability at altafiber (formerly Cincinnati Bell) in September 2021 and is responsible for environmental sustainability throughout the organization\, including subsidiaries Hawaiian Telcom and CBTS Inc. Her primary focus has been crafting the company’s climate action plans toward their target of net-zero carbon emissions in 2040. Before joining altafiber Ms. Turek was the Director of Sustainability Services at Woolpert\, Inc.\, where she worked with the military\, DHS\, universities\, businesses\, and airports to create and implement sustainability and resiliency plans and design LEED & green buildings. She is an Air Force veteran and a Society of American Military Engineers Fellow. Ms. Turek holds a BS in Civil Engineering\, a Master of Nonprofit Management\, and an MS in Environmental Engineering and Science. \n  \n \n \n Register Now
