SUMMARY:FBA Presents - How Far Can We Push Bend Insensitive Fiber
DESCRIPTION:If we look at the history of optical fiber specifically the designs of the glass itself and how it’s been protected\, we can see a significant evolution from those very first fibers produced in the late 70s early 80s that required a super delicate environment in which to perform over time both cable and glass designers improved their products and designs. One of the biggest changes was when bend insensitive fiber was developed this allowed several applications and handling characteristics to be improved. \nWe will investigate the benefits and pitfalls of the bend insensitive optical fiber. Specifically\, how this will change our concept of handling the fiber\, our concept of how to design the cables that contain the fiber\, termination practices\, and overall installation changes. The advent of more bend insensitive fiber gave rise to several application changes cable design changes as well as installation and termination practices. While all of these are pluses just like adding up tolerances in a mechanical design sometimes\, we find that we stack our tolerances all in the same direction and while everything is within spec the product fails. We will look at how all the benefits have been taken advantage of by the various stages in cable design installation and termination and where they may or may not cause a problem. In general bend insensitive fiber has allowed a much broader manufacturing envelope to be used. But are we coming closer to a failure edge than we recognize\, that is the question. \nPresented by: \nWayne Kachmar\nOwner and President\, Technical Horsepower Consulting\nOptical Cable Technical Expert at Fiber Optic Center\, Inc. \n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:FFB Week 47 - Economic Benefits of Fiber Deployment
DESCRIPTION:Around 62 million Broadband Serviceable Locations (BSLs)\, including at least 56 million U.S. households\, currently lack fiber broadband access\, even though some already have high-speed broadband. Studies show that fiber deployment offers substantial economic benefits beyond existing high-speed technologies\, suggesting that public investment in fiber would yield high social returns. Programs like Broadband Equity\, Access\, and Deployment (BEAD) program\, which prioritize fiber\, are crucial for maximizing economic gains. Fiber deployment could increase housing values by $1.64 trillion and provide a income boost of $1.6 trillion in terms of net present value\, primarily benefiting non-urban areas. Additionally\, fiber could create 380\,000 jobs\, support remote work\, and enhance educational and health outcomes. As a future-proof solution\, fiber can meet rising connectivity demands\, making it a strategic long-term investment for broadband infrastructure. \nWith Special Guests: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nColeman Bazelon\nPartner and Co-Lead of IP Practice\, \nBrattle Group’s DC Office \n  \n\n\n\n\nParoma Sanyal\nPartner and Co-Lead of Telecom\, Media\, and Entertainment Practice\, \nBrattle Group’s DC Office \n\n\n\n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:FBA Presents - How Field Service Management Delivers Real-Time Insights and Improves Fiber Installations
DESCRIPTION:In today’s competitive landscape\, the customer experience is paramount\, yet fiber installation processes often lack the transparency and control needed to meet evolving expectations. Common issues\, like limited visibility into installation progress\, lack of real-time tracking\, and difficulty assessing quality until the job is complete\, create “blind spots” in performance. With 90% of customers choosing not to report their experience\, providers are left in the dark about the true service impact. \nIn this webinar\, we’ll explore how implementing a field service management solution\, like Praxedo\, can help broadband players identify and address these gaps. Learn how real-time tracking\, streamlined workflows\, and customer feedback loops can empower teams to stay connected and deliver better service every step of the way. \nPresented by: \n• Cédric Venard\, General Manager\, North America\, Praxedo\n• John Greene\, CEO & Co-owner\, Mytra Consulting \n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:FFB Week 48 - Making Sense of the Dollars Spent on Digital Equity
DESCRIPTION:States are using digital equity plans to demonstrate how successful digital inclusion efforts can advance progress toward other goals\, including improvements to civic and social engagement\, economic development\, education\, health care\, and delivery of essential services. For example\, broader availability of affordable high-speed internet and digital skills can help residents access government services online\, apply for jobs\, take online classes\, and use telehealth resources. Although these tasks are not the direct focus of the federal Digital Equity Act\, measures that boost broadband adoption will enable more households to reap the benefits of the digital economy and multiply the effects of federal infrastructure dollars. \nOn this week’s Fiber for Breakfast\, Kathryn de Wit\, Project Director of The Pew Charitable Trusts’ Broadband Access Initiative\, joins Gary to discuss the economics and impact of digital equity investments. Topics will include: \n\nAligning larger policy priorities with digital education\nStates setting priorities based on local economies\, priorities and industries\nThe role of digital equity in enabling full participation in the modern economy and society\n\nWith Special Guest: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nKathryn de Wit\nProject Director\, \nBroadband Access Initiative\, \nThe Pew Charitable Trusts \n  \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:FBA Presents - Hard Hats\, Smart Tech: Accelerating Innovation in Telecom Construction
DESCRIPTION:The global telecom industry is valued at over $3.1 trillion in 2024\, yet the construction industry – the backbone of telecom infrastructure – remains one of the least digitized sectors. As we work to bridge the digital divide across the globe\, it’s clear that we must first look closer to home: within our own projects\, processes\, and companies. \nWhy are multi-million-dollar projects still being managed on the backs of napkins? Challenges such as project complexity\, fragmented stakeholder collaboration\, and resistance to change have traditionally slowed innovation. Historically\, low R&D spending and a focus on physical assets – rather than digital transformation – have further entrenched these issues. \nBut the tide is turning. New technologies like drones\, IoT sensors\, and construction management software are revolutionizing how telecom projects are planned\, executed\, and scaled. Governments and industry leaders are also driving digital adoption to enhance efficiency\, safety\, and sustainability in the field. \nJoin us to explore how technology is reshaping telecom construction\, why embracing innovation is no longer optional\, and how your organization can stay ahead in a rapidly changing landscape. It’s time to work smarter\, not harder. \nReserve your spot today! \nPresented by: \n\nNeil Grose\, Chief Delivery Officer\, Lit Fibre\nSteve Darflinger\, Director\, Engineering & Construction Management Systems\, Wyyerd Group\nMatilda Van Duyvendyk\, Customer Experience Manager\, Vitruvi\n\n \n \n Register Now

DESCRIPTION:Louisiana’s broadband office understands the first mover advantage. It was the first state to be federally approved for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law\, first to receive funding from the American Rescue Plan and first in the country in how well the state is executing broadband programs. Its efforts will help ISPs establish broadband networks to 67\,000 locations with $176M through the GUMBO grant program; it will connect 140\,000 locations with $1.356B from the BEAD program; and it will deliver internet service to more than 175\,000 homes and small businesses in rural Louisiana with $342M through the FCC’s RDOF. It is also helping local economies and job markets\, with an estimated 5\,000 jobs created for construction and maintenance of new broadband networks throughout the state. With 95.4% of its BEAD unserved and underserved locations to be served with fiber broadband projects\, the broadband office is ensuring its communities have the capacity to thrive. \nThis week on Fiber for Breakfast\, Gary welcomes Veneeth Iyengar\, the Executive Director of Louisiana’s broadband initiative\, ConnectLA\, who will discuss the state’s broadband efforts and the first mover advantage. You won’t want to miss it. \nWith Special Guest: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \nVeneeth Iyengar\nExecutive Director \n \n  \n\n\n\n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:FFB Week 3 - Breaking Barriers: Tackling Pole Attachment Challenges to Expand Rural Broadband
DESCRIPTION:Join Gary Bolton for this week’s episode featuring Annie Stroud\, Broadband Director Generation West Virginia. Drawing upon her experience with fiber deployment in West Virginia\, Annie will discuss the complexities of deploying broadband in rural areas and\, specifically\, the challenges related to pole attachment that are delaying broadband expansion in the state. She will share how organizations like Generation WV are helping to close the digital divide by addressing these issues and ensuring that federal and state funding – like the $1.2 billion allocated under the BEAD program -effectively connects unserved communities. The conversation will also touch on innovative approaches\, such as state task forces and rapid response mediation teams\, to overcome regulatory and logistical barriers\, minimize delays\, and control costs when connecting rural areas. \nWith Special Guest: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \nAnnie Stroud\nBroadband Program Director \n \n  \n\n\n\n \n \n Register Now
