Compact Splice Closures for Accelerated Expansion of FTTH Access Networks

Compact Splice Closures for Accelerated Expansion of FTTH Access Networks

The FTTH rollout can be further accelerated, simplified, and implemented more cost-effectively. R&M, the globally active Swiss developer and provider of high-end infrastructure solutions for data and communications networks, is now making a further contribution to this. The expanded family of the mechanically lockable ZOONA splice closures is designed to enable broadband providers to advance fiber optic network expansion in FTTH access networks at unprecedented speed. The latest member of the family is the ZOONA STP12, which has a capacity of 144 splices for the connection of several hundred FTTH subscribers.

The installation of the ZOONA access splice closures is self-explanatory. This saves training, work preparation and the use of expensive specialist personnel. Construction teams can install the splice closures in shafts and cabins or assemble them on masts in just a few steps without special tools.

It is even more efficient with the pre-terminated Precon types of the ZOONA splice closures. R&M offers six standard variants with up to 18 pre-terminated cable connections. The Precon solution is suitable for short-term network rollouts and distribution infrastructures that need to be set up independently of the subscriber.

Retrofitting during ongoing operations

Installers can open the ZOONA splice closures in just a few simple steps in order to replace or retrofit cables while the network is running. The QIKseal seals for the individual cables were also developed for quick and easy mounting without any special knowledge. The QIKseal seals can be positioned in just a few steps and screwed into the cable entry with the tension relief.

The modular build allows the use of the same closure for different applications, loop, splice and splitter configurations. This allows broadband providers to expand their access networks with low up-front investment as well as to implement different scenarios depending on demand and requirements.

The ZOONA outdoor splice closures satisfy IP68 protection requirements. They are tested for three meters of water for seven days. The fiber optic connections remain protected in damp environments and in bad weather. In addition, the splice closures are suitable as distributors for aerial solutions in harsh environments and for the fiber optic connection of mobile communication cell sites.
