Fidium arrives in Waldoboro and Whitefield, bringing all-fiber access and opportunity for Lincoln County communities
Future-proof, symmetrical speed fiber network from Fidium offers new options for entertainment, economic development, remote learning, telehealth and more, with plans as low as $30
WALDOBORO, Maine — June 2, 2025 — Fidium, Maine’s best internet provider according to CNET, has expanded its multi-gig, symmetrical speed internet service to more than 4,900 homes and businesses in Waldoboro and Whitefield, as well as parts of Alna and Nobleboro. Fidium’s all-fiber network delivers all the benefits that come with access to a fiber broadband connection to these communities.
For Waldoboro, completion of the project comes just months after the start of construction, and less than a year after a town vote to join other Lincoln County towns in partnering with Fidium on fiber network expansion.
“One year after an overwhelming vote to approve the match funding for this project, it brings us great joy to hear from residents getting connected for the first time or seeing a noticeable drop in their monthly bills,” said Max Johnstone, director of Planning and Development for the Town of Waldoboro. “With Fidium’s fiber expansion complete, we look forward to hearing how residents and businesses will continue to benefit from having access to high-speed fiber. We are grateful to all the people who have given their time over the past decade to help bridge the gap in digital access and are looking forward to entering this exciting new chapter with fiber throughout our community.”
“A year ago, I stood in front of the Waldoboro Selectboard to ask for support of a ballot measure to help bring future-proof fiber connectivity to Waldoboro in partnership with Fidium,” said Reuben Mahar, committee member for the Economic Development Committee and former chair of the Communications and Technology Committee for Waldoboro. “The vote on that measure got the ball rolling on fiber expansion, as voter approval helped ensure grant funding from the Maine Connectivity Authority. Today, with the completion of Fidium’s fiber network, every home in Waldoboro has access to fiber. This is a major milestone for our community, and after more than a decade of work, it feels really good to have such a successful outcome.”
Residents in these communities are among the first of more than 36,000 homes and businesses in the Lincoln County area that will be connected to Fidium’s all-fiber network this summer. Fidium’s expansion upgrades connectivity for residents and small business owners, enabling opportunities for improved educational outcomes, reduced healthcare costs and enhanced economic potential.
“In expanding fiber access, we are proud to help build the future in Lincoln County,” said Sarah Davis, vice president of Market Development for Fidium. “We have seen how fiber transforms communities, especially in rural areas where connectivity hasn’t always been easy. Fiber access delivers reliable connections, meaning more time and energy for growing businesses, furthering careers and engaging with loved ones. We are excited to bring Fidium and these life changing benefits to Waldoboro and Whitefield, as well as more communities set to be connected soon in Lincoln County and across the state.”
Today, more than 360,000 Maine homes and businesses have access to Fidium, with more availability coming soon across the state. Expansion of Fidium’s fiber network across Lincoln County will continue this summer, a project funded in part through a grant from the Maine Connectivity Authority, additional funding from Lincoln County American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grants and private investment from Fidium. As a result of this investment, access to Fidium’s future-proof network will be available in Alna, Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Dresden, Edgecomb, Nobleboro, Southport, Waldoboro, Whitefield, and Wiscasset, as well as Woolwich, in Sagadahoc County.
