For a fifth-generation farmer, the arrival of fiber was as significant as the introduction of electricity and the telephone generations earlier. It enabled checking markets, monitoring weather, and running a modern operation in real time. Agricultural technology has advanced just as quickly, moving from foam markers and the first iterations of GPS that kept tractor lines straight to autonomous systems that work the field with minimal human involvement while an operator follows progress on a tablet.
Precision agriculture is about maximizing the outcomes of farming and ranching while minimizing input costs, and reliable networks make it possible. Whether the operation is sugar beet farming or cattle ranching, each depends on its own mix of technologies, all supported by the same fiber foundation. Across North Dakota, partners including Dakota Carrier Network, t3, and North Dakota State University are connecting research extension centers, innovation hubs like Grand Farm, and working farms into a unified network that pairs fiber with fixed wireless, private cellular, and low-power sensor technologies.
At the center of it all is fiber. Every other technology on the farm, from private cellular and LoRaWAN sensors to satellite, depends on a fiber backbone to move data. The principle is simple: build the core once, connect it once, and keep the edge open to whatever comes next. With that foundation in place and AI now within reach, North Dakota is positioned for an acceleration in sensors, analytics, and automation that will help producers grow more, improve quality, and reduce losses in the years ahead.
