Fiber Unlocks New Revenue: ISPs Are Monetizing Smart Home Services
Today, 45% of consumers have at least one smart home device connected to their home network, with the average household now supporting 17 connected devices. This surge in adoption has triggered conversations about how internet providers can capitalize on the trend by offering new revenue-generating managed services.
Moderator Elizabeth Parks (Parks Associates) kicked off a dynamic discussion with panelists Robert Conger (Adtran), Jeff Manning (SHENTEL), and Jim Rosema (Gateway Fiber). The group explored why fiber is the ideal foundation for smart home applications, highlighting its reliability, low latency, and strong upstream performance as key differentiators over other broadband technologies.
As smart homes become more complex, one growing challenge is managing devices across various platforms. Internet providers are beginning to offer services that give consumers a “single-pane-of-glass” view into their home networks, making it easier to identify devices and troubleshoot connectivity issues. These proactive managed services are evolving into “white-glove” support offerings that help customers set up and optimize their smart homes. In addition to customer service, providers are beginning to explore the potential behind upselling hardware that enhances in-home connectivity.
